Acetone (nail polish remover), just don't leave it on too long, it has the nasty habit of eating cast iron.

      grease off the mortiser?

I ran into a similar situation when I bought my HF jointer a few months ago.
I used some spray carb. cleaner ( aerosol type)from auto parts store,
it made that greasy cosmoline melt off in a heart beat! Then I just wiped it off and cleaned it up with windex, wiped it down and waxed it up a couple of times and it was good to go! and watch it on painted surfaces, it can and will
      disolve paint! eezlock

brake cleaner, carb cleaner are a little too agressive, you don't want to take the paint off a new unit!

If you are able to use a solvent, e.g. mineral spirits, a rag or even a paper towel should suffice, abrasives should be avoided on new stuff, too.
