    Rpm?

I have a variable speed router and jointer.

When do I want to slow them down? When do I want to speed them up?

    Newbie here so be gentle...

Basically, the larger bits need to be run slower, same as dril bits.

Tom Hintz has a router bit speed chart on newwoodworker.com:

      http://www.newwoodworker.com/ref/rtrbtspds.html

One problem is that router speed dials are usually marked with numbers or letters, with no indication as to the speeds they signify; the owner's manual may or may not give this information. If not, you can usually just pro-rate the speed values between the minimum and maximum (which will be given in the router's specs) and that'll be close enough.

      I don't think I've ever heard of a variable-speed jointer ...?

Before they had variable speed, and soft start routers, I ran those big muthers on my PC 3.25 hp router, and I still do. That thing takes two hands and one knee. If you don't have a VS router, a slow feed and smooth pass at incremental depths are really necessary.

The Delta Benchtop 6" Jointer is variable speed. There's been a lot of those sold.
