    Tapering

I need to taper the ends to some Bamboo. But this question is just about tapering in general.

Is there a tool of some kind that I can buy that will allow me to taper the edge of wood...or bamboo?

    Thanks.

For tapering straight stock on the tablesaw, you need a tapering jig. Tom Hintz has a good page on this here.

For tapering by hand, a plane or a spokeshave will do the job. That said, I've never worked with bamboo, so can't be more specific.

HF sells a very decent aluminum taper jig for TS use. It's around $15.

        Thanks for the reply guys...

Will that work on the ends of the rounded bamboo? It seemed like that jig would only work for straight cuts.

        Thanks again.

Oh, ROUND bamboo. That's a horse of an entirely different color!
Seriously, what is it you're trying to do? Bevel the end of a bamboo shoot? Cut it lengthwise, but at a slight angle? Is this part of the famous fountain production project? How does it fit in?

yeah, It's part of the fountain I am doing. I am making a Shishi-Odoshi. I have bamboo poles(tonkin) that I need to taper the ends in order to fit the pieces into one another.

If you Google Shishi Odoshi you can see exactly what I mean.

It would really be a pain to do it by hand, I know I could but I figured there was some sort of drill attachment of some kind that I could just sort of skin it down.

I don't need it to taper all the way to a point, obviously the bamboo is hollow(I'm using up to 1" diameter poles) so I just need to take a little off to fit into the adjoining hole on another piece.

I got my delta bandsaw and it cuts the bamboo great, I am really pleased with it. I just need to taper the ends now.

Don't know if this will work, but my wife dabbles in furniture made from willow. I use a tenon cutter on an electric drill which tapers the willow. They are available in different sizes from Lee Valley. Because of the structural differences between willow and bamboo it may not work.
