    Price quote from local lumberyard

Got a quote from a local lumberyard and I was inquiring on the price of their Cherry and Hard Maple. The store manager said they sell by linear foot and all lumber are surfaced on all sides..

Cherry 1X8 is $7.58 linear ft.
Hard Maple 1x8 is $5.32 liner ft.

Are these pretty decent price compared to the prices at the home centers, rockler, woodcraft or any online hardwood retailers?

1"x8"x12" = 2/3 (two-thirds) of a board-foot. which means, that works out to $11.37 per bf for the cherry. my local guy offers cherry at $6.34 / bf, one side sufaced. i guess there'd be a premium for 'all sides surfaced' but 100%...? seems very high.
i have never seen cherry at HD/Lowes; have heard of - but not used - any online vendors. i am sure others here would have more to add to that.

It seems a bit high to me. I think the going rate to get all sides surfaced is less than $1 a BF. That puts your lumber alone costing more than $10 a BF. I would look around a bit more.

Ya, that is pretty high. Certainly could justify the cost of a planer and jointer to significant other pretty easily!

You have been quoted for the very highest price classification of finishing.
Basically they are offering you hardwood lumber in dimensional sizes (e.g. 1x8) finished all four sides and cut to your length. You are paying for the wastage due to cutting and the wastage when they trim random width boards down to the standard dimensions.

If you plan on using these boards without any more cutting and finishing, then that may be what you want.
but if you are cutting to custom widths and generally making a piece of furniture or something then you will be ding a lot of cutting and shaping
and it may well be much more economical to buy maybe S2S (surfaced 2 sides) and cut the widths and lengths yourself.

I know at my local hardwood supplier they have these premium boards up front stacked and every board is dimensionally the same as the board next to it - you are paying for this uniformity.

If you go to the racks in back then the you'll find the rough cut stuff in random widths and lengths that goes a lot cheaper.
But you need to be able to joint and plane and maybe resaw.
