    If you mean by a sliding square a combination square then you know these can be fine tuned...
    The blade rides on two slots one on the 90° face and the other in the 45° face, you have to file the depth of one or the other slot to make those square to the 90° face when the blade contacts bottom of the two slots.

      No, Loring I didn't know that. Looks like you came through yet again, thank you. I'll try filing but first probably need a certain size file which I'll buy tomorrow at lunch. Thank you so much for that bit of info. I had set the combination square aside planning on giving it to Goodwill. Now this is really, really good news. I'm dying to try it.
