Where to get rare earth magnets?

I have been reading a few posts on these and also some searching on the internet. I have a project in mind and would like to get some.

So, are they available retail-wise? Don't recall seeing them in HD or Lowes. What type of retail stores carry them or do I have to go online.

I always sort of like to do the touchy-feely stuff when trying out a new product.

    TIA

well, eBay is good, lots of sizes and vendors, but it doesn't meet your touchy-feely requirement.

If you can visualize the sizes listed, they are very strong, you can buy 'em by the dozens pretty cheap.

I saw them in a catalog I have at home, Lee Valley. Here they are:

Never seen them in a regular store.

        Ken,

I think you'll have to go online for these -- I have yet to see them in a retail setting, anyway.

I'm pretty sure I got mine from Lee Valley. There are other cheaper sources out there, but I wanted to get matching cups (holders) etc., which LV carries.

They say the cups add to the strength of the field, but they also help to install the magnets into your project. A great tip I ran across for the cups: cut a slot down the side (e.g. with a hacksaw), to allow removal of the magnet.

        Regards,
        Tom

Radio Shack has them in their catalog. Whether your local store actually has them in stock, that's another matter.

I found several different sizes at my friendly neighborhood Rockler store.

I have an electronic component surplus store in town that usually has a few assorted sizes... it's hit and miss. Before that, I ordered mine from Edmunds Scientific.

RE magnets are truly awesome. I buy mine from Lee Valley locally.
Remember they are very strong and not to get anywhere near any type of mag-strip card, pacemakers and some types of electronics such as PC harddrives.
