Online wood

Having searched around the web for lumber suppliers as well as local suppliers I found a number that seem very cost and user friendly and will ship for free.

Does anybody have any experienece with buying wood over the internet when you cant pick your own boards?

Who is good (or bad), any special tips, any other advise?

I have bought wood online a couple of times. Really was not all that impressed. Yes I saved some money but either ended up with “Wet” wood or wood lacking in figure. I’m pretty particular about my wood purchases and I like to look at what I am getting especially the figure. So far online even with veneer I have not been all that happy with what I bought.

I have had good luck with ordering from Stephen Wall Lumber Co. I've ordered the 1/2" thin craft wood ( I've ordered cherry, figured maple, walnut and spanish cedar ), I've also order cherry "shorts". I've been happy with both the quality and price.

I bought online once. I would do it again if I absolutely needed to, but since I have found a local source I would be hard pressed to do it again. I thought my online deal was a steal, but it seems nothing can compete with prices offered by most local sawyers and mills, and you can usually hunt and peck for what you want.

I haven't done any online orders myself (I'm still buying at Lowes ), but I have heard good things about a few places. I had some restoration work done by a local fine furniture maker, and he recommends Wall lumber (mentioned above), http://www.groffslumber.com/body_index.html, and http://www.irionlumber.com/. I have also seen irion lumber mentioned as a source on the New Yankee Workshop web page. His take on it is that he has a good working relationship with these companies, and they will send him what he needs. The walnut that he used for the restoration work (he built new leaves for an old extension/dropleaf table) looks great.

For the price difference, it seems wort a try, but shipping may be a killer. Anything other than small quantites need to go by freight.

another pretty well respected online source is www.woodworkerssource.net they seem to have verry good wood at prices that are better than HD and Lowes. They will ship their lumber packs free.

They will work with you. I have even had them take pictures of the wood before I order it.

Let's say 500 pounds from PA to CA. I am curious as I can get 100 board feet of OAk for $210. Will shipping kill the deal?

100 bd ft will probably be more like 350 lbs.

I don't know about freight but when I order wood to be shipped by UPS, I usually figure
on paying what the wood costs, again, in shipping, so I double the price I see.

Freight from SC to OH for that weight (I priced it out once) would be $150 ish. From PA to CA it would be about $200, I geuss.
