    I did it.

A few days ago, I set up a basic crosscut in a 1X4--squared off the cut line, adjusted miter fence, made sure all was right with the world, turned saw on, made the cut...smelled plastic; what's wrong? Turned saw off, scoped out situation...

I had cut about a half inch off the plastic end of the miter fence. I just needed to confess. I have painted the red line and everything. I know exactly how it happens. You're concentrating on everything on the business end of the miter fence. At least it was the plastic, not the aluminum!

Just kidding. I did it too the first time I used my SMT

So welcome to the custom miter fence club..

Welcome to the club. It first I couldn't figure where the black sawdust was coming from.

I think the same thing happened to most of us.

Doesn't that just make it a ZCMF ? Zero Clearance Miter Fence ?
                lol

Of course, you'd have to leave it in exactly that position for every future cut.....haha

Maybe if I read this message again every day, when I go home at night I won't make the same mistake on mine. But I'll take cutting that miter fence any day over cutting my finger.

Had my saw 4 years this month and nary a nick in the mitre fence. No red line either.

I came so close last night. I was cutting something at 45, before switching back to 0 degrees. I forgot to do the left pull. I'm always focused on not putting anything I don't want to loose through the blade, but within 2" of the SMT, I saw a problem and reversed the cut motion.
