This good first time router?

Good price and value for a first time router? I'm going to use it for simple edging. The most complex I see myself doing is dowetailing.

I haven't used one, but Hitachi has a good reputation for routers and I've heard good things about it....seems like a great deal. Lowe's might have the same deal available to you locally.

No rain intended here. Just be sure that the unit will fit any other attachments that you anticipate using in the future. Some router raising appliances only take PC, certain DeWalts and so on, as do someof the router plates for homemade tables. If, on the other hand your needs don't include a table or you forsee using a dedicated router in the table this is a great deal - go for it.

You might consider a basic Milwaukee 5615...tough and incredibly powerful for it's amp rating. The 5616 adds VS and more power.

I have this router except I have it in the kit with fixed and plunge bases. The kit is about $30 more but I think it is worth it. The sander and free shipping from amazon included. The kit also includes set of templates, fixed base version does not seem to have them Templates are usually about $30 themselves and you need them for dovetailing, so I would go for a dual-base kit. Look at Amazon KM12SC model.
I have a problem with my router - I believe I got a defective unit. Bits are impossible to remove from colletts. Tried both 1/4" collett and 1/2" - the same story. The router is now at the Hitachi authorized service center because I cannot remove the bit at all. I believe every manufacturer gets some defects once in awhile so the fact that I got a bad unit does not say they are all bad - the important part is for Hitachi to provide good service fixing it. I don't have answer yet how good the service will be.

I think it is a very good router for the money -- that beind said; I would go with a Porter-Cable or Bosch instead.
