    Dining room table for grandkids

My grandkid's mom bought a new house and asked me to build a dining room table for her and my grandkids.

I took an Ann White drawing made some modifications and put this together. The main table is old reclaimed shiplap and the rest is just yellow pine I resized to meet my plan.

Whoa! That is such a grand piece of furniture! Looks sturdy too!

    What's the finish?

Thank you! The finish is some American oak poly finish I had left over and then 3 coats of water based satin poly I wiped on. Nothing really special on the finish but I used a water based sealer to prevent or lessen blotching on the pine.

Looks great. That’s a unique support at the base.

Really a very nice table. Your grandkids will enjoy sitting down to family occasions with a table made 'just for them' by their grandfather!

That top reminds me of an oak desk I made when I was overseas. Looked identical in color and shape to the top picture except it was only 3ft front to back. I did run into one problem - humidity swings caused just enough contraction and expansion to cause gaps and a few cracks in the boards on the inside boards.

              Thank you all.

The base structure was a re-engineering of the original plan because I wanted to be able to remove the top for easier transport and getting through doors.

As far as splitting concern on the top, I glued and screwed those boards to a piece of 3/8 particle board for stability. I have used this technique several times with success so far. It does add significant weight. This top is 64"x40" which is as close as I could get to the golden ratio.

Great job and a good way to recycle old wood!
