My recent SMALL virus stay at home restoration project ...

I didn't (but should have) take any before pictures. This is a OLD school house teaching tool my wife picked up several years ago. At the time it was in "barn quality" shape but she is a retired teacher and decided she had to have it. It set in the house in an unused bedroom for lo these many years and was abused by several young grandchildren to the point of no longer standing and the scroll paper which was already in serious decay was torn off the rollers and in pretty shabby shape.

Since I didn't have any other projects in mind I decided to see how much restoration I could do to at least make it presentable. I scrubbed it down with steel wool and denatured alcohol, put a couple of coats of "tung oil finish" on it, reattached the pieces parts that were no longer attached and did my best to restore the scroll (backing big torn and missing parts with butcher paper) .

It is in way better shape now than when my wife purchased it and is no longer a dull, dirty black in color.

That looks pretty nice. I can't imagine how many hours you've put into that, but the results were well worth the time.

Do you have any idea how old that is?

Thank you. Honestly I don't know when schools used this sort of thing but, my mom was an elementary school teacher in the mid 1950's in a very rural area and this was used well before then. My simple research dates it in the 1940's.

Is the section with the architectural drawing a roll of instructional drawings? Do you have the other paper rolls... ie.. math, spelling... history etc! There is no telling how much thought was put into this teaching aide! It is fantastic, and does not require a cord!

Yes the scroll is one continuous paper. The top, much of which is missing is the preamble to the constitution followed by drawings of several presidents then an alphabet and numbers. There are geography and history items and further down full color pictures of animals and plants. The scroll is quite long.

This was most likely an official home school aid....... and probably sold by Sears Roebuck
