    Thank you Paul and gerti.

Paul, if you have vents on top for air circulation, I think you need to leave
space above the mantle for the air to circulate.

here is a pic of the mantle (with sidewalls) that we had on our
52" TV...This mantle was 15" deep. We placed the TV back a few inches,
and made a facial piece that we installed across the front to fill in the
space above the tv (which was about 3") This way there was room for
    air circulation above the Tv.
Do you know what I mean?

ok, just went through the archives and found another pic of
the old TV set up...we built this unit to fit our 50" TV...
then had to modify it again to fit the 52" TV...then again
the third revamp was for the 65" TV...
      Only the third time
we had to make an entire new mantle top...and also a much
smaller bookcase on the right...old mantle depth was 15"
new mantle top 9 3/4" deep.

Just so you know, the new mantle top is securely attached to the wall...
(my main man, wears suspenders and a belt )
the brackets are just decorative and don't really support the top.

The old mantle top had side walls (that held up the shelf)
as you can see from this pic.

There was also two clips on each side ( behind the tv) that secured the top to the wall.

the cardboard cut out on the left, is my mock-up for the new mantle
for the new tv. I am a very visual person, and struggle with my designing
      of the pieces we build.
