    Simple Maple Box

Got a little shop time in the other day to make this box from all the saved firewood. I sliced up some spalted maple and let it settle for a while. Finally this weekend allowed me time for this prototype. All my stuff is a prototype.

Before the pieces are glued up a dado is run around the inner face of the sides about 1/2 the thickness of the stock. Once the box is dry it's run through the bandsaw and cut at the bottom of that dado creating the lid. Then the bottom part of the box gets some rabbits cut in to fit the lid.

I used a mitre joint for the sides to carry the spalted pattern around the box and not break it up with end grain.

Looks great Bill! Love that spalting pattern on the maple, very strong. Did you / will you finish, and if so, with what?

I used miniwax wipe on poly in satin. I wanted a no-finish kind of finish to it. With a project like this people seem to "see" the box with their hands as much as their eyes. Leaving that organic feel adds to the final product IMO. I should have applied some BLO first to make the grain pop a little more but hey, it's a prototype..

          Bill,

As Loring said, a lot of spalting there and you have done great job with it, especially with the wrap around. Thanks for sharing!

Beautiful box bill. The grain flowing around the corners is the kind of attention to details that makes it stand above the crowd. Well done sir!
