I posted about this a bit ago, but only when I was looking for a supplier for a decent sized slab and then I needed someone to help me with a drum sander (THANKS BRIAN!)
But here's the finished project.
I didn't take any before pictures, but the slab as I received it was pretty rough. I tried using my hand planes, and quickly re-affirmed that I have no idea how to use my hand tools (yet). Luckily, a forum member local to me was nice enough to invite me to his shop where it must have taken 40-50 passes to get the whole thing flat across the width of the slab. I also was able to see some great work, which hopefully I can eventually approach with my own work in the future.
Then once that was completed, I needed a straight edge to go against the wall. Since once side was a live edge, I cut the flat by using double sided tape and affixed that to an MDF board. That worked really well, and I got just the cut I needed.
Some more sanding to bring it up to 220, and a light wipe-down with mineral spirits. Then I applied many coats of oil based poly (wanted to darken it, plus it had to be able to handle some light moisture).
I mounted it to the wall using some small shelf brackets that fit the look we wanted. I then drilled holes for the sink and the faucet (definitely was something I measured many many times over- can't go back once you've drilled out with a hole saw).
Overall, I'm extremely happy with the result. I'll post pictures with the house completely done, which won't have a mess of tools in the frame. But for now, hopefully you all appreciate it.
Thanks!
