    cedar fence with pics now

OK, so I'm not too good at manual labor. I hired some guys to install a fence on the left side and right side of my property. Shared the costs with my neighbors.

I was cheap though, when they quoted me to put a gate where I used to have a closed corner, I balked because they were charging for 3' of fence at $15/lin ft. and $175 for the gate itself. I decided to put in the gate my self and told the contractor just to leave that end open.

Here's my gate on the right ($45 material) and the one on the left next to the neighbor's garage is the one the contractor did for him (at $215).

So I saw the contractor knock out the gate in about 20 minutes. I think mine took a whole day. His looks pretty good and mine fits perfectly.
He built his on the driveway and I built mine on a pair of sawhorses because I'm too old and stiff to be bending over on the ground.

But, look at how he hung this hinge:

that would never be acceptable for my work.

If your only tool is a hammer, you tend to treat all problems as if they were nails.

Far more elegant ways to handle that. The first would have been to plan ahead.
It won't last long the way it is installed now. Of course it depends on how often it's used, but personally I would redo it myself.

+1. I agree. It's pretty straightforward. Things we might be able to do ourselves may not be worth the hassle of the job. I paid pros to install our paver patio. I could have done it, but not in the same time frame. It would have been an on-the-knees project. Not one of my favorites.

Yours looks great and your neighbor's looks terrible! Your neighbor accepted that?
