    Perfume cabinet project.

We make a lot of stuff, I'm a great believer that 'more is more'

I thought I'd show you my perfume cabinet for starters.
It could easily be transformed into a jewelry box with slide out
drawers behind the door. Maybe, the LOYL's would love one!

First we made two end tables for our bedroom, so I needed the perfume
cabinet to be a specific size to fit on my end table.

this is the frame.... ok, I'm having trouble posting pic's
only the first one is full size, the rest is thumbnail and not
    able to resize?

    see if this works...before staining.

The back is mirror, the sides and top are glass. I wanted as much natural light pouring through because of the stained glass front.
The jeweled knob is a pin I picket up at good-will for a dollar, I glued
it onto a wood knob we made.

thanks jeepman, cabinetman, leegljp, dbhost for your nice comments.

yes cabinetman, we did the stained glass, we incorporate a lot
of stained glass in our pieces...

lee, the LOYL will absolutely love it...just make sure you measure
her perfume bottles to judge how tall to make it.

I have another pic coming of the table we made (actually we made two
end tables) to show off this perfume cabinet.

you guys like pic's, I hope.

looking for the table pic, I came across this. This is the one we made for
                the bathroom...It's only 6 or 7" deep...

this is it before installation...I also think this would look
good in a bedroom for the LOYL.

this is it installed...it also has a matching floor cabinet

inside...the back is wood, the sides and shelves are glass.

                hope you like it.

Thanks cabinetman, this is the pic I was looking for
when I came across the wall perfume cabinet.

Firstly, the wash stand is a family piece that's 100 plus years.
It was down our basement for years, stained a very dark
blackish color (ugly) so I painted it green...I know, what
was I thinking. So I sanded it down, and re-finished it to
                      match our bedroom set.
I gathered my inspiration from this piece and designed
two end tables to match. I loved the cyma details on the
bottom of the wash stand, so used them in the night stands,
both on the top and bottom.

the end tables are QS white oak, the cut out wood behind the
pulls and the little carved thing under the shelf is walnut.
The chippendale pulls I got at a yard sale for 1.00 each...
I'm always on the lookout for unique pulls. When I bought those
pulls the head cabinet man said, "why are you buying those?"
I said, "cause we're gonna build cabinets around them!"

                      this is my table

the wash stand I believe is flat sawn red oak and Qs red oak.
here's a close-up. It has the original lion's head pulls, that I gold leafed.

                      before sanding and stripping.

the tv shelf in the room in the same vein...love those cymas

                        Thanks Pappy,

                        Here is the original drawing...
it had two drawers, which I changed...the head guy
calls this...the Joann changes along the way.

                        Before the staining...

Designing around hardware is more common than most people think. I get clients that bring in the hardware, or have pictures of what hardware they want to use. It's then a matter of getting all the other details to fall in line, just like you did. Yours came out fantastic.

Just a suggestion...when making a raised door panel, consider having the grain on the panel to be vertical instead of horizontal. It's a visual thing.

BTW...did you carve the fleur-de-lis on the bottom apron/skirt?

                          .

no cabinetman, the wash stand belonged to Cliff's grandpa.
It's over 100 years old. There are no screws in the interior, and the
drawer slide is made from wood. I can only take credit for the
                            re-finishing of it.

                            you skipped over this part...

I know what you mean about the door panels, the grain direction
in those the doors bothers me a lot. Actually, the characteristic
cathedrals in flat sawn oak bothers me as well...I always use
BLO first before staining oak -- so that the dark part doesn't
                            take the stain so dark.

I forgot to ask Cabinetman, do you do hand carving?
I love the little touch of hand carving, but we're not good
at it. Our son is very good at whittling and whittled me some
                              things that I truly love.

I should get him to try his hand at hand carving!
Then get him to do it for me.

I'll go through the archives for pic's and do a thread on it, I think
                              everyone will find it interesting.
