    Curly Maple Jewelry Box

I'm doing a lot of boxes these days. This is the first one I've done with an interesting inlay, so I thought I'd post it.

It's curly maple, walnut miter keys and lift tab, and inlay of walnut, cherry, and mahogany. I still need to put in a lining.

All I can say is WOW! You should post this masterpiece on Woodjocks as well.

Nice lines and shape. I love all of the subtile curves, the wood and inlays make it all the better. It's really beautiful.

How and when are you doing the shapes?

Very very nice box. I love the lines of the project along with the wood.

After cutting the blanks for the sides, and before assembly, I did the bottom curves on the router table using templates.

After assembly I made the cutouts for the lid on the front and back using a 1/2" bottom-bearing bit, which brought the cuts right up to the sides.

Then I used bit called a "furniture/box maker bit" to make the curves on the outside.

The underside of the top was shaped with a rabbet bit, then a 1/4" roundover to match the 1/2" bit used above. Finally the top side was shaped by hand with a block plane to match the curve of the sides. That's when I made the groove for the walnut pull, but I should have done that before the previous step. It was hard to backstop the cut to avoid tearout.

Now THAT is sharp looking... Almost a pity to line it...

Any lining you use is going to be a distraction from a fantastic piece of Maple. The most I would consider is a bottom pad in the individual compartments.

                  beautiful design!

Yeah, that's the idea. Maybe a ring holder or two.

or perhaps you could make a smaller box to hold the jewelry, and sit this one next to it just to be admired!

kidding aside, gorgeous box and great workmanship!
