    Spalted Birch Cup

Hi, my name is Bill and I am woodaholic. I'll stop on the side of the road almost anywhere if I see free wood. Yes, the chainsaw is always in the back of my truck.

I found a birch tree that seemed to have been cut down to make way for a nearby telephone pole. It looked like it had been there for a while. You never know what the wood will look like until you slice it open. Here is what I found on the inside of this one.

    Original piece

Here is the hunk of wood I chopped off. Notice the difference between the heart/sap wood. The heart is very rich although not as spalted.

The rest of the tree is safe in an undisclosed location.

Very nice, a cut above the rest!

Nice wood! A while back I got my hands on some Birch ply cut offs that were spalted.

Nice find, Bill. What do you drink of that unusually-sized cup. Mead or grog or something?

Very nice! That looks like a perfect cup for drinking Scotch in the back yard by the fire.

Found wood is the best (as long as it doesn't contain metal...)! Nice find.

I used all Mylands stuff, cell sealer, EEE was and friction polish. Not really my food-safe polish but I wasnt intending to use it for food.

My wife said I should make drinking cups out of the spalted birch, I suggested Dixie instead. Thanks for the kind words guys.
