    Desk

Here's the desk the at I built for the secretary in our office.

Picture of it in the shop:

Added drawer pulls that are the boss's initials and which are used in the business name:

    Delivered and setup on Saturday.

It was a pleasure working on this large of a project in my shop, real glad that I've got the space for it now. each side is about 6' long, which would have taken up almost 1/4 of my old garage shop.

            That's pretty sharp looking.

What did you use to finish?
On the pulls, did you do them all? If so, how?

For the pulls I just made a template on the computer and cut them out on the scroll saw.

For the finish I used Oil based polyurethane, and that's it. Did 2-3 coats depending on the location of what I was finishing.

No, I haven't changed jobs. Still at the same place that I've been for the past 9 years.

Desk came out real nice. The contrast looks good. What did you use to join the two tops...something like tite joint fasteners? Any other support for the joint?

Wow, that turned out very nice. The birch and walnut really look good together. The drawer pulls were an especially nice touch.

That should earn some big time brownie points with the secretary AND the boss!

To join the joint where the two tops connect I had some metal brackets that Grizzly included with the pallet that my table saw came on. Doubled them up and put two sets of them at the corner. On the moulding along the outside of the desk it's glued to the short top, then I have three walnut dowels that I made that goes into the end of the other top. Then of course I have screws through the drawer cabinet that goes into the top.

Where the back edges of the desk join I have four 4" screws that pulls that joint tight and then a piece of moulding that tucks up under the lip of the desk top. The moulding just sits in there loose so that it can be pulled off and the desk taken apart.

To move it I just put it in the back of the truck, two cabinet bases, two desk tops, 6 drawers, 4 grommets, pen/business card holder, monitor stand, keyboard shelf were all the parts I brought down.
