    Back in the saddle

Hi Guys, I am properly back in the saddle and here is some proof.

I have just finished this commission and it will be delivered tomorrow. It is a modification and restoration project. This was originally an extending dining table but the owner (who I would guess is in her late 50s) says it belonged to her parents and was always a coffee table as far back as she can remember. She therefore thinks it was her father who cut it down. I would guess it is at least 60 years old. It was completley stripped back to bare wood. I joined the two halves of the top and built a new pedestal (Octagonal) and then refinished to match their new kiitchen where it will be used as the kitchen table.

Here are a few of what it started out like. Notice the large untreated stain in the center which was apparently caused by a constantly leaking flowerpot of her mothers.

Now one single round top and cleaned back to bare wood. Given the age an extent of the water damage I could not completley get rid of that stain. Also as you will see the color they chose did not allow me to hide it with the stain. They are OK with that as it still holds memories from her childhood

Applying finish to the various parts

All complete and a fresh coat of paste wax :-)

Wow! You give new meaning to 'restore'!
What did you stain with, and what finish?

Nice job with the rehab. Looks good. Did you use a protective film finish over the stain or just wax?

Thanks guys it was a fun project and as Bob said its great when something can go full circle.

Herb - This is all Qtr sawn white oak. The feet were made using laminations as they are approx. 3" thick. It is all white oak though. The original stain was much darker so hid this more. It was a rather yuckky brown, probably popular 60 years ago.

Radhak - Stain is a minwax "Gunstock" oil based. I typically dont reccomend colors but send folks off to the local HD or rockler and get them to pickout some colors they like. I make up some samples on scrap of the same stock and then let them choose. This way I dont get into a "hmm I dont like the color now" issue The finish is a simple oil based poly.

CMan - I used a good number of coats of Poly. This will now be a kitchen table so utility is the main aim. After it cured I have given it a layer of paste wax.

Gets delivered at 4pm today and I get a check Although it looks like its already earmarked to have our furniture cleaned (no new tools)
