    finished shop staircase/railing

I just finished the stairway/railing in my shop. (Other than the newel post caps)

This was my first stair case and offered the challenges of being structural, lots of angles, meet the codes, allow forklift access, and match the otherside of the shop (the winemaking area).

It is built all out of pine. The posts were glued up and then mortised through to allow the posts to be connected to one another. Between the posts is framed with pine with cross pieces at the top, middle and bottom to allow for nailing the 5/8" thick wainscoting, which is applied to both side of the railing.

It is finished in four coats of sprayed minwax helmsman spar poly, to match the same tones as the wood in the wine side, which does get washed down, thus the need for the "extra" protection.

I may do the opposite wall in wainscoting to match, but my only concern now was getting the railing complete and the permit closed.

The grape carving was done on my carvewright, and matches the wine theme to go along with the wine room on the other side of the doors, although i designed it so it could be changed out to something else in the future. It was a 14 hour carve.

    Here are some pics

If your only tool is a hammer, you tend to treat all problems as if they were nails.

The forklift access is especially clever.

WOW!!! Now where is the big green envy smilie? Very nice work. I can only imagine what it would be like to have all that space for a shop. Mine only gets larger in the summer when I can open the overhead door. Keep posting when you get the tools and equipment installed.

            Chas,

I hate to post this pic, but i had to push everything aside to clean the shop and prep fop finishing. Its more like playings wheres WALDO, but about 2/3's of my tools are pushed together in the pic!

LCHIEN, I actually bought the forklift for shop construction, its a 1960 allis chamlers, and it was only $1500.00. I thought i would sell it when i was done, but it is ever so handy! Its hidden in the picture as well!

Yes, it a carvewright, used it to cut the grapevines on the stair platform. I think it is okay, and workable if you can learn all the quirks and work within its limitations.

See just like a "where's waldo" or I spy game!

I'll start unpiling the stuff this weekend, so it can be put back to use now that i am done finishing the stairs

I don't know what philistine really means exactly ... but I think you may be a philistine. You also NEED a bulldozer even if you don't need a bulldozer.

Excellent work on the stairway Jess. Where does the double/French door lead? I would love to have a garage like that. Do you have an acreage?

                          Thanks for sharing.
