Garage Cabinets

well as i am reorganizing my garage, the next item that i needed to build was another set of garage cabinets.

i made them out of 3/4" mdf and the doors are cut from 5/8" mdf. these are 16.75" deep (16" clear inside) x 42" tall x 4ft + 2ft + 4ft wide section. the doors were attached using an exposed hinge. i made the face frame out of mdf as well.

i like the mdf color, so i did a clear coat. basically, i sanded the mdf to remove all marks. then applied one coat of minwax sanding sealer. then applied two coats of wipe on 'satin' poly. in between the finishes, i used 0000 steel wool

while i was at it, i also hung our steel wheel barrow on the wall.

Looks good Omar. Garage/shop cabinets don't have to be fancy. Now you have room for "stuff". You did some nice planning to get a layout that fits well. Did you need help installing? Gotta leave room for the bike!!!

Have you used MDF for this kind of application previously? I haven't tried it, because I am concerned the weight of the stuff in the cabinet would cause the MDF to warp over time. Have you found that to be the case?

I don't have them myself, but a coworker of mine put together a set of cabinets out of MDF about 10 years ago for his garage workshop. No warping yet in the Texas hot humid summers. He did use a LOT of primer and paint on them though...

my bike is now going to be parked in my single car garage because i need to get both of my car into this garage. i used to leave my car outside, but it use to end up under the tree and it would fill up bird sh_t and its ruining my car. wife cant park on the right side of the garage, so i have to get my car in. that moved my bike to my ww shop......

as for help getting them up, i screwed a 2x4 to the wall to create a ledger, got my wife to lift the cabinet in place and then i screwed two screws into the wall at the top and moved on to the next cabinet over.

the middle cabinet is not a seperate cabinet, the bottom shelf was dadoed into the two 4ft cabinets on the side, the top was screwed into the sides of the two cabinets using pocket screws from the top. the face frame was screwed into the face frames of the 4ft cabinets on the sides and into the top and bottom horizontals of the middle cabiet.

the doors were all hung afterwards. for that i clamped a 1x4 to the bottom of the cabinet at the desired height and put the doors on top and screwed in the hinges.

i made the carcass of the cabinets for the laundry room and bathroom out of mdf, its been now three years and they are doing fine. they are heavily loaded, especially one of them. you can see those here.

sarge, since we moved into this house in Nov of 2004, my cars may have been parked in the garage for maybe a week or two per year. its usually this time of the year when i clean up and get to park them inside. before you know it, i start a project and the cars out!

i am trying to get myself to keep my projects confined to the small garage, so this was an attempt to clean up so that i can do that. i have attached a picture of my shop in progess down below. my bike is right now parked in the empty spot. i will have to either roll it out all the time when i want to work or park it in the two car garage and have my car collect bird sh_t all over again......time will tell . maybe i can teach my wife to park on the right side of the garage, so my car wont be parked under tree for the birds....

my next thing is to move my bandsaw into the small garage and get a handle on my sheets goods that you see on both side of the garage.

since the housing boost, city of chandler would not allow a three car garage facing the street. so builders, would split it by having a two car garage face the street, and then the one car garage would be 90 degrees to it on the otherside of the house....so i only have two garages, not three....i wish i had three....
