the classic way of making a chssboard is to rip 8 lengths of alternating light and dark; the same consistent width should be achievable with a good table saw and featherboards.
Then join (edge glue) them in into a board with alternating light and dark strips 8 wide.
Then rip the cross direction to get strips of light/dark squares the same rip setting used before.
Then flip every other strip end for end arriving at a checkerboard pattern. Join them edge to edge (glue-up again) and you get a perfect chessboard matching squares fits perfectly.
If you want small contrast strips between the squares then you can picture ripping them and laminating them between the L&D strips.
P.S. Oh, shudda looked at the video Klefow posted first... that's the exact same method i described.Last edited by LCHIEN; 07-04-2009, 11:19 AM.

Very nice Reddog... wouldn't be interested in coming over and installing a parquet floor in my entrance-way would you....?
Your mom did good on the ceramic chess set also. Although I don't find time to play anymore.. an old girl-friend from down in Austrailia made me a cerarmic set back in the early 70's which is quite nice. The bad news is none of my downfall lumber would fit in her kiln.

If you have a band saw and you're short on wood, you can use my shortcut: Rip 2 lengths, edge glue them, resaw into 4, edge-glue again, then cross-cut. It comes out beautifully every time!
