Boxes are kind of fun because you can experiment with different combinations. For instance the box shown here could look nice with a walnut burl panel in place of the glass.
I saw an article in Fine Woodworking suggesting a nicely figured lamination on 1/2" MDF for the top. The MDF would provide stability, the laminate would provide the "look".
