    Baby Crib Finished

Finally finished the crib. I think this is similar plans that master53yoda just posted. I had similar issues with the side rails and the curves on the post and aligning the m/t. Well, ok, I had a lot more ploblems then that, but it was the first time to use many tools ( jointer, planer, talbe saw, router, dowel jig, band saw, mortiser etc...) on one project. I also have to write up my kick back incident that launched a missle from my garage into my living room.

Hard Maple with Salad bowl finish.

Oh theres more, expecting our first on March 26!!!!!
I think I will go let my table saw run all day today, it might be a while before I here that sound again as the nursey is directly above the garage.

As said in a later post, Lyla decided to come a few days early......

Very nicely done Todd. What did you finish it with?

Very nice work. I really like the finish; it sure to brighten up the room and give the baby a warm welcome.

That looks real fine Todd. Congrats on the growing family. A small piece of advice though; don't worry about making noise around a sleeping baby as they can learn quickly to not be bothered. I know from my own experience in this. Once upon a time my shop room was just across the hall from my twins bed rooms and my running power tools did not bother them in the least. I've heard that if you try to be extra quiet around babies they will have a harder time adjusting to disturbances when they sleep but if you just act normal they will adapt. Kids are a great source of a long, long, long list of projects. There will be plenty you'll want to make. You might start now on the high chair you'll be needing within the year. Rockler has a good plan that will match the crib.

            +1 on that.

When our first was born we lived in an apartment building and her room shared a wall with the main entrance. Lots of noise all hours of the day/night. She sleeps through anything.

When the 2nd was born we had moved into a home and she is a significantly lighter sleeper.

            Hardly conclusive, but...

Nice job on the crib. The curves look difficult.

Speaking to one who will definitely know what I'm talking about. How did you cut the right angle notch the length of the closet rod that is in the top of the curve. I finally made a raised out-feed insert for my fence on the table saw and datoed mine in 2 passes. but it took a lot of thinking about how to do it to keep the dato straight lengthwise on a 1 1/2" rod.

Your finish is nicer then mine. I have made the decision to never try something like that again with pine as it just does not finish as well as other wood and keeps any bumps that you do during construction.

Very nicely done Todd and the finish looks good. Smart move with the Salad Bowl Finish as it pops grain on maple.. is extremely easy to apply... and is safe for kids to lick and chew on. And if you don't think they won't lick and chew on literally anything... you have a few surprises ahead. Ever been to the emergency room to have a green removed from a nose?

                Again... well done.

Beautiful work and I don't think I have EVER seen anyone post a project that nice with that many first time use of tools.

+2 on that. My mom told me before our first was born that babies learn to live with you, not the other way around. I agree, get them used to sleeping with noise around. It's best to do that when they are first born, when they sleep all the time. Of course, we were truly blessed. All 3 slept for 6 hours at night by 3 weeks, and we never wnet through collic .

Well, she decided to show up today. Lyla Grace born 3/23/2009 11:59 AM. 8 lb 5 oz 20 inches. I will post some picture in a while. What a great day. We are sitting in the hallway because the Tornado sirens are sounding and she is sleeping like a rock.
