    Master bathroom cabs

After getting some outrageous quotes from some local cabinet makers, I went ahead and built these up last weekend.

I took these pictures after the granite guy finished.

Very Classy! The bathroom has a great look.

The tile around the bathtub seems to match the vanity top, which tells me all that is new too? If yes, you must have had to some coordination and measurement with the granite guy?

          Thanks!

That granite was actually from a remnant. We gave the granite guy one of the tiles and he walked around his yard and held up the tile next to slabs that matched - then sent us pictures.

We got the granite really cheap (as it was a remnant) as a result.

Here is an album of the whole remodel:

Very nice! I especially like the finish. What did you use?

I'd like to tell you a story about how it was a 10 step process... but in reality: two heavy coats of MinWax Golden Oak, 3 coats of MinWax poly. **yawn**

One other thing that happened that may have effected the finish - I was working partly outside and all of the wood - even the plywood - got caught in a downpour.

The grain raised like crazy and I had to sand the snot out of everything.

This was my first real "cabinet", and as such I really didn't know what I was doing.

I used pocket screws (and a glue) for most of the joints.

I built it in two pieces (so I could carry it myself).

The cabinets are the parts on the ends (stack of drawers and the door part). The middle section of drawers is just the space between the two cabinets. I built the face frame in one piece, and covered the whole thing.

I had to have a custom built vanity because (1) if I wanted to keep the ridiculously large mirror, it had to be shorter than a normal vanity, and (2) because we wanted drawers, the spots the pipes came out of the wall interfered with the typical drawer locations in stock cabinets.

The bench is just installed with 6 screws underneath. It covers the tub plumbing, so it will be easy to get to (heaven forbid).

We were going to top the bench with the same granite as the vanity top, but the stone was damaged during fabrication, so I had to glue up an oak panel. It turned out ok, but had I known, I would have made the bench 1/2" taller (so there would be no gap under the window).

Very nice cabinets, Dave! I like the bench with the cuby holes.

Just new doors and drawer fronts, counter tops and appliances. The cabinets were already faced with nice oak, and are solid birch plywood. We couldn't think of any better way to lay out the kitchen anyway.

Nice work! I suspect that you like Oak. A weekend eh? I didn't do mine in a weekend, that's for sure!

I went with the oak for a couple reasons. First, the kitchen cab face frames and cab ends were already oak, so adding oak doors/drawers to them was easy.

Next, there we have a huge spiral stair case made of laminated oak - it goes all the way from the basement to the second floor.

Plus, honestly, the price is right.

I guess it was a long weekend.

Friday: surfaced, and ripped pieces, cut out pieces from plywood sheets
Sat: assemble carcass, assemble face frame
Sun: sand, stain, made drawers and doors
Monday: poly (ok... that's not really the weekend anymore is it?)
                              Tuesday: install
