My Fist Boxes.. and it is Obvious.. :>)

I owed my favorite niece Lydia a wooden Xmas gift as she was left out of the one's I made for my wife's female family. She saw a piece of Ambrosia Maple laying in my shop one day and loved it with it's worm-holes. She also loves purple and her taste reflect any other typical teen girl I suppose... unusual.

So.. some scraps from around the shop but.. I decided to do a set of small boxes as I knew my wife Lisa would want one too. Easier to make a run than set up again. I have never done any small detailed items really and certainly not decorative boxes. My boxes are "big" boxes. I attempted to keep it simple as I knew there was a chance I would flub the project as I was not too familar with "how" on many small details.

So... I simply piled up the stock and simply made a humble attempt making design decisions and adjustments on the fly. Getting the hidden pin for the hinges was somewhat of a challenge as it is a learned process with not real formula of where do you drill to get the rear of the lid to clear the lower box and open. I'll know next time or at least have a much better idea.

But... I did make a couple of jigs to add miter splines.. cut angles on sides.. etc. etc.. So next time things won't be quite the challenge this first set brought. All in all they could be better and could be worse I suppose as I tried to keep things simple on my first shot at small boxes.

Thanks for looking... not much too look at but much experience gained is the good news.

The grain on the top of the box you made for Lydia made it look as if the surface has an undulating wave sort of quality to it... Very interesting look... Good execution too... You should be proud of those boxes. And I am pretty sure the ladies will love them!

If you are going to put your fist in there, how can you give them as gifts? And where is the hole for your arm?

Seriously though, great looking boxes! I love the way they photograph, the grain is very unique and does strange things with the camera, in a good way.

Nicely done! Beautiful! If that's your first, I want to see what you're doing when you're 'experienced'!

                  Very Very Cool

                  Sarge

Those are great boxes. I am sure both of the women in your life will be proud of them.

As you have indicated, changing scale on project is very challenging, and the smaller the project, mistakes seem more obvious. And it the small project require as much or more time to complete.

                  Great Job.

Very nice work, I am sure Lisa and Lydia will cherish them.

How did you get the names in the lids?

                    Thanks

Hey Sarge - nice boxes even if you did use your fists

Do you have any detail on the pin hinges, what did you do and what might you do different next time?

That piece of grain which came from the same left-over piece of ambrosia maple is what caught Lydia's attention in my shop several months ago and I used that portion on her box. It is quite unusual as the remainder of the same board did not carry the swirls and tiny knots. You move your eyes slightly in a different direction and the piece undalates as you mentioned and the way the light hits it seems to actually change color. Most maple will give off that effect but I have never seen a piece that does it to the extreme that that small section of board does...

Go figure is about all I can come up with?
