Here's a fireplace mantle that I just finished yesterday. It's for our downstairs gas fireplace. It took about 25 hours to get it done (three weeks of nights and weekends). You might find it strikingly similar to Norm's mantle from the NYW. I broke down and bought the measured drawings. I probably could have done it by sight, but I found the plan somewhat helpful through the process. The back and mantle pieces are 3/4 birch ply. The fluted pilasters, trim and moulding are pine. I put up the slate to match the shower in the basement bathroom. Thanks for looking!
