Fireplace mantle

Here's a fireplace mantle that I just finished yesterday. It's for our downstairs gas fireplace. It took about 25 hours to get it done (three weeks of nights and weekends). You might find it strikingly similar to Norm's mantle from the NYW. I broke down and bought the measured drawings. I probably could have done it by sight, but I found the plan somewhat helpful through the process. The back and mantle pieces are 3/4 birch ply. The fluted pilasters, trim and moulding are pine. I put up the slate to match the shower in the basement bathroom. Thanks for looking!

Out of curiosity, did you investigate the building rules for how far from the firebox the would should be? That seems really confusing to me.

It depends on the fireplace. This is a zero clearance gas fireplace, meaning that combustibles could be placed right up to the edge of the fireplace, if needed. The fireplace unit is put right up against the studs behind the wall. I'm sure the clearances for a wood burning fireplace would be quite different.

Looks great! Building mine was a lot of fun and it's the kind of project that you can be proud of for years to come. Of all the projects I've done, the mantle was the one that made the biggest visual impact.

BTW, I'm sure Nahm would be proud. It's a good thing you got the measured drahwrings.

Copper, that is an awesome job!!! Tell me more about the cutting and assembly of it! Did you use any jigs or crosscut sleds on the trim pcs?

Very nice mantle.It is simple and elegant not overly done with the molding as some Ive seen.You should be proud of your work .This is one of the main focal points of any home and yours is both unique and handsome.
