This is my first finished project posting, so please be gentle. It's based on a Wood magazine project, modified to my wife's "suggestions." Made from cherry and cherry ply. Drawers were dovetailed using the Rockler jig--which I found more than adequate for my needs. Overall, it took me probably a year to build, but that's with maybe an hour or two of shop time per week, give or take. Finish is BLO followed by 4 coats of Arm R Seal.

I had my eye on that plan from Wood for a long time; always wondered how it would turn out - yours seems to be perfect!

Actually, yours looks even better ! (the pic from wood below). You increased the center drawers to six, nice.

First project post and you start out saying "please be gentle"? No, Brian, I won't be gentle with you. As soon as I can find someting wrong with it I will let you have it with both barrels!

I looked at the pictures again, clicked on them to make them bigger, and still can't find anything wrong! First or one hunder and first, outstanding workmanship throughout.

It appears that taking your time has worked for you. I bet your wife really loves it! It is a good thing that you made the base larger to make room for that wide screen you have planned to buy in a few years; just guessing. Your choice of cherry for a first major project posting is risky but as we've seen higher risk sometimes results in higher pay back. I'm thinking you nailed this one. Keep up the stunning work.

Thanks for the kind words. The modifications to the original Wood project were indeed made with an eye toward the large flat screen we plan on getting--probably this holiday season. The extra storage that comes as a byproduct is a bonus. I almost screwed up on calculating the drawer sizes. I wanted them tall enough to store DVDs in their boxes. When I calculated the original dimensions, I forgot to account for the fact that the drawer bottoms would be 1/4" up from the bottom of the drawers. Luckily, I had allowed just enough extra height that the 1/4" miscalculation didn't cause any problems a little planing of the bottom edges of the sides/front/back couldn't solve.

In this case the Audience (me) sees a great production with no errors in execution. You have built a beautiful piece of furniture. Now what went on backstage is for only you to know.

It matches the decor and flooring perfectly all you need now to finish it off is a nice new big screen TV to fill the gap in the right proportions
