    Two New projects.

We updated our mantle from flat sawn red oak to walnut.
We made the mantle a few years ago on our stone FP and scribed the wood to fit into the stone. The charactoristic cathederials in the oak has been bothering me ever since. So, I got the brainstorm to clad it in walnut. We resawed the
walnut to 3/16th" think and glued and clamped it. Here it is drying outside.

Here is the almost finished project. I am doing a hand rubbed finish about equal parts -- Poly, Turp, and BLO. I am applying it with a rag and have three coats on so far. Plan on doing two more.
I'll be back with the next projet.

      bungee cords?
It high time you sprung for some real clamps. (that's a good pun, eh?)

      other than that, looks good!

This is the second part of the project, went from a 50" DLP to a 52" LCD
Had to make over the top the the TV cab that we made almost 4 years ago. Sawed down the sides 6" and made a new top. The old top was 1 1/2" with a cove molding on top. The new top is completely different, we kicked it up a notch. I wanted the mantle top to mimic the other cabs in the room that we made.
The last time i posted here was when we made the secretary unit over my roll top desk. The roll top desk is to the left of the tv cab, they are seperated by a doorway.

Innovation drives Americans! Some companies sell the silicone rubber tubbing as "clamps" for odd shaped wood.

          GREAT work and well done!

This is the another photo I took when we completed upholstering this 100 year old chair that was in my hubby's grandpa's den. We never upholstered anything in leather before it was a daunting task. Leather is unforgiven and you need to tug the heck out of it, as it doesn't stretch like other fabric. The footstool was made by Grandpa, he used horns for the feet. we have had a gizillion coverings on this little stool throughout the years.
Anyhow, notice the end of the old cabinet, with the old tv...boring top, huh?

Lchen, We have several dozen assorted sizes of furniture clamps...
If you look closely at the mantle, you will see that it is scribed on both sides, to match the stone, thus we were working with irregular surfaces on both sides. The bungee cords were the best possible way to clamp the wood without a lot of improvising... There is more than one way to clamp something....Just ask a woman, we proficient at using both sides of our brain.

Thanks Leehljp, Necessity is the Mother of Invention. Actually we use bungee cords in conjunction with furniture clamps
a lot... It works great for those hard to reach places.

Big difference in the appearance of the cabinet. I don't remember the original mantle, but the Walnut looks great!

sorry, rereading my post it sounds critical and at the time i was trying to be humorous. SHould have used the smilie things.

if they work ok, bungee cords are fine.

                      Thank you gentlemen.

Luchen, I didn't take it as a critical remart, as my slightly snarky retort was followed by a smiley face.
Getting back to bungee cords, they sure come in handy as an extra pairs of hands many times.

                          Thank you Mike,
Pappy, This is the way the old mantle looked...I didn't dislike it, however I didn't like it either... I love the new mantle with the rich walnut. It is quickly becoming my favorite wood.
hmmmmm...A walnut cabinet with raised panel doors (for our foyer) is in my future!

I can't put up my scrolled words on the new mantle, until the finish on the mantle is complete. I think the words will be more impressive on the walnut.
