    My First Box

Well, I just finally finished my first jewelry box. Thankfully it took less time (18 months) than the desk I made for my daughter.

The plan, including some slightly rough instructions came from a book by Doug Stowe, “Simply Beautiful Boxes”

I used Mexican Rosewood for the body, Spalted Maple, re-sawn and book matched for the lid and Macassar Ebony for the base.

The box is finished with three coats of Watco Danish Oil “Natural”: First coat put on heavy and left for one hour (keeping it wet the entire time), the second coat was wet sanded with 320 grit wet/dry paper and the third wet sanded with 600 grit.

The box has two coats of Liberon’s Black Bison “clear” paste wax.

All in all, it was a weird experience working with small pieces and joinery. I think I’m hooked and I’m starting to work up another design that has more of my own thinking included. It takes a while to start thinking about such smaller pieces.

Let me know what you think, of course I like it, but then again, I wouldn’t post it if I didn’t.

          Very, very nice!

I have been reading Doug Stowe's books and am starting to build some small boxes myself. It is a different mind-set than cabinetry, isn't it?

After looking at your nice work I want to have the pictures of my boxes taken out of the completed project thread.

Very nicely done. Working with same stock is a different challege.

OMG! that is very beautiful! the one who get this is going to be very happy!

the wood choice is great, the colors contrast is amazing. the sliding drawer is very neat, i mean the miters are cut clean. i like the dowel type hinge you used for the lids. the handles are very neat!

i love every aspect of the box.
