    Wondow Cornices

Just call me Martha Stewart. I finally got around to making three simple fabric-covered window cornices for our reading room, using all scrap wood and about 1.5 yards of fabric that my wife picked out for about $12. 1/4" plywood was sufficient. The hardest part was actually installing them. (What a pain the in the you-know-what!)

I was shocked to find that these can actually cost $200-300 if you have someone do them for you! I found shape ideas (and really high prices) here: http://www.fabricworkroom.com/store/...p-1-c-697.html

I got oriented by reading through this Lowes tutorial: http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?actio...ldCornice.html

Looks good. Wife wants those with the top solid for added shelf space. When it comes time to cover them, they are hers.

SWMBO came in while I was typing the last response. Now the idea is in the front of her brain housing group again! She want them all wood to match the colonial trim and not only wants the tops to be shelves, but wants them to protect the contents from dust. (Think shadow boxes.)

Alex, be glad you are in North Carolina and I'm not!

Edit: I hope your wife reads this and LOVES the shadow box idea.......

You could try reminding her that she will need a ladder to get stuff in and out, and how much she hates ladders.

Nicely done. Brings back memories of growing up in the 50's as almost every house had them in the "living room" which wasn't necessarily the room most people congregated in. That would be the large country kitchen.

Very nice! Love your crown molding also. Don't have time now, but I'll have to check out the links you gave in your post.

Thanks, guys! LOML is pretty happy with them too.

I opted to not add a top to them because I figured they would just collect dust. But I guess that's what they're for -- collecting dust. Plus it would have made installation a whole lot easier! Oh well

Yeah, no kidding. When I was browsing that first link I posted, I saw something like "fabrics starting at $250... $350... etc" and I thought, "surely this must be for bulk orders". So I just played along and started stepping through the ordering process. Sure enough that was the PER PIECE price!

I like that. My wife had me start a window valence over a year ago.
Everything is up as of last month but she's got to put the fabric on now. I
need to rethink this after seeing yours.

Very nice Alex. I am glade you said there was a fabric covering. For a bit there I thought you'd made them out of peg board.

                              window cornices

Looks as if you did a good job on those cornices for sure. My wife has been after me to build her some for the den. I have the lumber stored in the loft of the shop ...but haven't gotten around to yet....but maybe when the weather cools down a little....too hot to work in the shop these days and the humidity is a real killer here!

What did you use to hang them with on the wall? I have contemplated several different hanging options...but can't decide which one I'll use.
I thought of using the old style wooden window screen hangers. The type where one part is afixed to the wall and the other part is attached to the cornice board in the upper corners and you lift the unit up and slide down
and drop onto to the fixed portion and lock them in place. I'm still open to any new, good ideas for the hangers......I like simple and effective they work better. eezlock
