    Mission Style Hall Bench

Here's my first completed project of the season. A Mission style bench made as a wedding gift for a good friend. They sent a pic and I basically tried to reconstruct what I saw, plus a couple of "liberties" here and there. It's mostly red oak but there are some pieces of "wine vat" QSWO interspersed. There are 36 M&T joints. The 6 pegs are handcut from Sapele. Finish is mix of Minwax Early American and Golden Oak, and Behr's tung oil finish (which is a poly/tung oil mix). It's about 36"w x 15"d overall.

Their original plan was to add a custom made cushion but they weren't 100% positive during the early discussions, and they haven't seen the end result yet....decision pending on that aspect. (the model pic shows the cushion)

Wow, that sure is a beauty. Those M&T joints look great on paper and in the finished product, but they can get a big old during construction, can't they!?

    Nice work.

      Great job!

That is a work of art! They must be special friends. A bench like that runs into the $$$; and yours' is a master piece. Hope loml dosn't see this, or she will be wanting to buy it, and I don't blame her. Great work

That is a very nice piece of work there! You draw it up from the picture? Ever put it to paper?

Thanks for the supportive feedback everyone.

Duff - I blew up and printed the original pic to an 8-1/2 x 11 and estimated dimensions right on the pic, then made a cut list on the back. It was pretty crude but it did the trick.

Excellent work - I prefer the grain on yours over the model. Great reproduction work.

Very nice work Dust.. resulting in a very nice finished piece. Tell your friends that if they add the cushion.. they might as well just cover the rest in vinly or something else god-awful. Just from a lover of oak's perspective.

BTW.. you don't suppose we could tell where the mix of QS oak pieces are from the grain fleck do you?

                            Well done, young man...

                            Regards...
