One concern I have is about the lid and hardware. Did you use toy box lid supports which prevent the top from slamming down? I did not see it mentioned.

The only hardware is the small brass hinges, mortised. The "up" position of the lid in one photo was accomplished by placing a thin stick in the underside gap when I lifted the lid; it held when I let go take the picture.

This is one item that is often overlooked. While the top recess in the bench front will help little fingers from being pinched, I still highly recommend some kind of lid support. I am still going through the toddler phase & can attest that the typical toddler often has the attention span of a gnat. They also don't understand the laws of gravity. I've had my boy close drawers by grabbing the top of the drawer front & pushing. Meanwhile my wife or I is yelling "Stop" & trying to get to him before the drawer closes.

The bench is very nice, but, I do think the lid should have some kind of support.
