    Very simple design.
    I think that 1-3/4" piece in the middle is definately overkill for the strength required.
    I guess it makes it easier to tack on the legs... but you could do that with just two square pieces 3/4" thick, 1-3/4" square...

      How about 2 pieces (say) 3" long x 1-3/4" square? The possibilities are endless.
