Completed this couple of months ago, but could not show here as I did not have a camera. Actually, taking the pictures is a pain - no way to get the full picture standing up! And yes, that's too many books for a small family, but that's why I had to build it (and there's more books that I relegated to a closet)!
Made with Red Oak wood and plywood. Copied from a design in FineWoodWorking, and adapted for my space. It stands 84" tall, and total width is 106", of which the middle portion is 36". The ceiling is tall enough to allow a taller shelf, but that'd not be practicable.
I wanted to put a couple of doors, but LOML nixed it. She's fed up with the kids slamming all cabinet doors. I might still go ahead and put two on the hutch up top; but my 5-yr old wants to use it for 'her display'. She keeps commanding me to make changes by the day .
Have only 3 accent lights installed as yet; have 3 more, am planning to put them facing upwards. This weekend, surely...!
Best of all, LOML loves it; and everybody knows there's nothing more rewarding that that !
I took so much advice from y'all here, that this should be called 'our shelf' . Thanks all!
You might see that I used a bunch of miller dowels to attach the face-frames to the cabinet. I had thought they would be more prominent. As such, I might as well have not bothered with the walnut color.
A closer look at the 'table'. I wanted this for myself, but it's taken over by my 8-yr old; she loves the idea of a 'nook' it presents.
I am sure nobody on this forum is gonna miss the router burn mark on the stile . I did not see it till it was up there, and then I left it alone as a 'character' point (okay, I was tired).
