    Kitchen Cabinet Slideouts

This was a practical cabinet modification project that I saw in Family Handyman (or one of those magazines). We use our bottom kitchen cabinets for storing pots, large cooking pans, etc. It was always hard on the back and knees to get anything out of the cabinets.

I followed the drawings in the magazine article and made one set (2 drawers) of drawer boxes mounted with full extension slides. We liked the results so much, I made two more sets. Then I made 4 more for a friend who wanted them for her kitchen. It makes retrieving kitchen items a lot easier.

One day I might stain drawers to match the cabinets

They look very good, but You need to buy some food, or put the pans back in. Seriously, it looks like You have a space to move the drawers away from the sides, is it a 2X? Bill

Did you add the plywood divider between the drawers? If so, how did you attach it?

Nice work. I must have seen the same article. The base cabinets I'm building for my new kitchen are all drawers save for the sink cabinet. I'm sure both our backs will thank us. Pat

Lonnnie: Yes, I did. I made the dividers out of MDF and fastened them with 4 small angle pieces - two in front, two in back.

I got smarter as the job progressed (isn't that usually the way ), and determined that I did not need such tall pieces of MDF as dividers. In the two subsequent cabinets, I used shorter pieces of MDF that went under the existing shelf. This way I did not have to reconfigure the shelf supports

Bill: I actually mounted the slide units on 1 x 4s. If I had used 2 x, I would have lost drawer width. I put thin 1/4" 'caps' over the 1 x 4s, that's why they might look wider than they really are.

As I was posting I saw and knew it wasn't a 2X. Bill

That looks good and a great idea. It will make getting items out a lot easier.

Very nice! I've often wondered way ALL cabinets don't come that way.

Have sliders on a couple of my kitchen cabinets and can tell you they are worth every cent paid for them. Nice job on yours. Look like they turned out super.

I have no clue. I bought a nice desk and the **** drawers don't slide out all the way. I'll have to replace the rails at some point, it's my only complaint with the desk.

Well, aside from the fact that it weighs 300 lbs and I had to put it together myself, but you only cry once, right?

Nick, your slideouts look great! I've had a bad itch to do some of my cabinets like that since I saw that same article. I also saw another magazine that had something similar except the sideouts were vertical like bookcases whereas these are horizontal drawers.

The vertical ones were in tune for box/food storage with adjustable shelving. The ends were more open so when you open the cabinet door you aren't staring at just the sideboards (or ends) of the cases. There were two such slideouts per cabinet opening.
