I made several of these Exploding Boxes from a description in an American Woodworker Book entitled Great Gift Projects. They can be made in an afternoon. The box is made out of Birch and stained a dark walnut. The moldings were made on the router table.
This is the view of the box when it is assembled.
These are the sides of the box. The glued on blocks allow the hammer [I learned this is the term used for the business end of the mousetrap.] to knock the sides and the top off.
I modified the plan when I put two cut off nail heads where the hammer hits. I put those little plastic caps that come in a ring, on each nail head. When the hammer falls, it makes a bang. The video dampens the bang substantially. It sounds like a .22 LR going off.
