    Knife Block

Couldn't find any really nice plans so just sort of did this one on my own based on a photograph in the Williams and Sonoma catalog. This is maple and cherry. Think if I did it again it will be a lttle smaller. This one is 5 1/2 " across, 11' at the bottom.

Nice work Mr. B!! Love the tones of the wood. I was a little scared on the first photo with the finished product so close to the fireplace
      Good job!

I remember you asking for plans awhile back. I almost responded with something along the lines of "you don't need no stinking planzz." Looks like you figured that out on your own and did a great job!

              Buddy,

Looks great! Was just getting on to look for some examples when I saw yours. For the the knife slots did you just run the piece through the table saw? Measured the thickness of my knives and was way smaller than my thinnest blade, thought about trying to take off a thin layer on the router table, but may be too much trouble. Now that you have built one, anything you would do different next time?

              Thanks,
              Doug

Doug, Yes, I made the slots by running it thru on the saw blade. One of the slots I made wider by doing it twice. I used the thickness of our chef knife to decide. And yes, I would do some things differently, especially it's a touch too wide - 5 1/2". I would make that close to 4 1/2. I would also figure a better glue plan for the outer covering (1/2" maple). Was hard to get all the corners down.

Actually, was not too hard to make but I did do a full size rough drawing on quad paper to refer to. good luck if you try one of these.

Looks great! That's one of those things that looks easy but there's a lot of accuracy needed to wrap the cherry. You did a great job.

Time to get started on a matching cutting board.

Looks good, did you take measurements of the knives first?

Yes, for the largest one and just used several other slot sizes for variety. Actually used a regular kerf blade for some and a thin kerf for others

It turned out OK altho I know where the flaws are. If you really want one go for it, if I can do one from scratch, anyone can.
