Two years in the making (including the promise)!

I promised this project two years ago and started in the late spring. Cherry and maple with alternating color face-grained plugs. Hope that you enjoy this. The top and bottom rails of the back are mortised into the sides. Neat project.

That is one beautiful piece of furniture, that it is a swing makes it more so. The contrasting woods set this apart from any ole swing. The vertical slats in the back are a great touch.
Chiz my friend, you should be extremely proud of this piece. Well done.

I like the contrasting woods a lot.

Nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't how hard you hit; it's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done. Now, if you know what you're worth, then go out and get what you're worth. But you gotta be willing to take the hit, and not pointing fingers saying you ain't where you are because of him, or her, or anybody. Cowards do that and that ain't you. Very nice! And in only two years - if I promised something that nice (or anything else for that matter) my wife would be thrilled if it can in under two years. There are a few things that I am sure are beyond the two year mark already.

Very nice. What did you use for the finish? Did you build from plans? I could see a couple of those sitting on my deck.

I purchased the plans a couple of years ago and I was a bit intimidated by them. As I thought about it I also began scavanging up second quality cherry - a lot of long splits, dark swirls and knots. Essentially, the stuff I call beautiful and interesting. While milling the parts I tried to make sense of how they interfaced with other parts and often did not drill holes or cut angles until I was done with cutting the parts. I'm glad that I took that route because the plans templates weren't always accurate and they had very wide cutting lines. The finish ended up being Cabot's Austrailian Timberwood/ Natural but it wasn't clear. I'm supposing the bit of pigment in there was for UV protection. Cmpared to a Danish Oil sample that I did early on it's not much different. Compared to many other applications of oil finishes this one drank it in quickly and wuldn't take more. I ended up with a blotchy, some shiny and some dull areas so I went over it with green 3-M pad. After a good vac and wipe-down I laid on another light coat and wiped it off leaving only the slightest hint of wetness. That was the ticket to the final effect. I was a bit perturbed at first but I suuure do like the outcome and the compliments from all of you. Many thanks!
                    Blessings,
                    Chiz

Beautiful swing, Chiz! I love the coice of woods. Over time the Cherry will darken with age and make the contrast more dramatic.

how do the vertical slats in the back join into the top rail (dado? if so who do you dado on a curve?). also, did you stain the maple, if so what color? and lastly what type of finish did you apply at the end?

Thanks, omar. I used a slot cutter on my table mounted router. The tops of the slats were supposed to be rounded to match the dado but that was too much effort for an unseen element. I measured the differential between the highest point and the lowest point of the slat and that stayed constant. I jus cut them all at that angle and slid them in. After having them all installed and centered I had to insert stop blocks to achieve the spacing between the last slats and the upright.

With regard to the maple, I wanted them to remain as white as possible and they aren't too tinted but there is a slight yellow cast. It turns out to be not so bad. The Cabot's Australian Timber Tree Oil has some slight tint for UV protection, I believe. Actually, after I stirred the can it looked sooooo scary that I doubted that I would use it. In the can it looked like three day old coffee with a hint of cream. Ugh! Since the sample turned out OK I went with it. HTH.
                              Blessings,
