    Deck is Finished

About 35hrs total. Still need to do the landscaping The drink holder on the corner is a feature I saw on another deck a few weeks ago. It covered a goof and meant I didn't have to waste 2 2x6s. As far as LOML is concerned, I meant it and she likes it.

A gazillion internet bucks if you can spot what's wrong with the stair railings. My wife couldn't and my brother who has a great eye for detail couldn't. I'm still not sure why it happened. And no, it's not the odd spacing on the last baluster.

Well, if the balusters are the same length then:

    1. I would guess that the handrail is not parallel with the steps.

    2. Otherwise the balusters are different lengths.

If I gotta choose, its No. 1.

I'm going with #1 as well.

Looks like the 4x4 is a few inches too long (high), like maybe it would fit if moved back one step.

I agree w/ the guess that the railing isn't parallel to the bottom of the stringer.

HOWEVER, I think it looks fantastic and the drink holder is a nice touch.

It is a great looking deck, and a really neat way to finish off the corners.

Not sure I would have noticed anything "off" either, if you hadn't mentioned it..

I'm no carpenter but I think it looks great. What the heck is a baluster anyway? Yeah the drink/ashtray/food holder is a nice touch. Good job I think.

              1. The balisters are not parallel with the stairs.
              2. As a result of 1 the top of the balisters.(handrails) do not attache at the top
of the posts at the top of the stairs as they are supposed too.

Either you just plain did not catch it or you ran out of wood and fudged it.
Looks nice for a wood porch/deck.

You guys are pretty good. I was out there with my beer earlier and figured out what I did. I measured the 40" to the top of the railing at different points on the top and bottom stair tread when I laid out the posts. I didn't discover it till I had the posts on, top rails on and balusters cut for one side. I put them on and neither my wife nor my brother (who is a stickler for detail) noticed so I figured it was ok.

Nice job, David. I just finished off some stairs on my deck this past weekend so I know they are a complete PITA.

I bought pre-cut stringers and 2x2 pickets for the balusters, but that still left plenty of figuring and cutting.

Truth is, I spent most of yesterday un-doing and re-doing a stair detail I just couldn't live with...still not happy with it.

I'll post some pics if I remember.

                          BTW, for whoever asked,
balusters are the close-spaced vertical supports for the handrail on a stairs or balcony.
