    Raccoon Intarsia

    Hi all - long time lurker, first time poster. Decided to try my hand at intarsia - here's my first attempt. Lightest shade is maple, darkest is walnut, the rest is Western red cedar.

          Very nice! I was contemplating trying that raccoon out, but it looked a bit much for me given the amount of time I can spend on it. How long did that take?

                      Time spent

                      Thanks for all the positive feedback and the welcome!

                      Dave, total clock time was 10 - 12 hrs. Spent 2 - 3 hrs on the cutting (careful cutting means less fitting later on!) and the rest was spent shaping and finishing. The rough shaping was done with a Delta belt/disc sander, and followed with a pneumatic drum and hand sanding. Finish is three coats of Minwax Satin Wipe-On Poly.

                      BTW, found something good for sticking the pieces to the backer. It's made by Dap called StrongStik. Dispenses like caulk, repositionable up to 15 min., and parts don't slide around like they do with regular wood glue.

                                  That is just plain neat. I haven't tried any intarsia yet, looks as though it would be fun though.
