I used General Finishes Cherry Dainish oil. I used General finish satin for the clear coat. One coat of Cherry three coats of clear, boy that took awhile. The grain effect is just the grain of the plywood with the cherry stain on it.

The "doors" are really just 1/4 red oak molding that I put on the plywood to give the apperance of doors, same with the "drawers" they are 1/4 oak. They are not functional, although my husband asked the same question. The mattress is behind there. I was really trying to give the apperance that there were cabinets and drawers, and I guess it worked. The side bookcases do have actual cabinets though.

Very nice job !! What are the dark strips on the fake door? Stain or 1/4 wood on the plywood? This really looks sharp. Also where did you get the mechanical part of the bed?
                  Thanks again,
                  Mike

Thanks again to all of you, I really appreciate your feedback. Mike, in answer to your question, the dark strips are just the plywood grain. Some of the veneer just took the stain darker than the other, I am not sure why. The kit is the hydraulic kit called "Create-a-bed". I purchased it from Rockler because I had a gift card from Christmas. You can also buy it direct from the manufacturer at

The cost at Rockler I think was less than the cost at Wallbed.com.
