    Spice Rack

OK, so it kind of made me feel like I was in high school woodshop, but my brother-in-law really needed a loaded spice rack for his wedding.

I built this one to fit bottles from Penzey's (http://www.penzeys.com -- well worth a visit if you've never seen them) -- short ones on top, then regular sized ones in the middle. I added some extra room for those big jars of BBQ seasoning that you get at the grocery store, plus a few little drawers for things like nutmegs and may leaves that Penzey's likes to use as packing material.

The drawers were dovetail practice -- there were all totally free-form to give it that hand-made character.... probably a little too much of that hand-made character in this case!

I built the drawers first, then I built the rack around them to get a just-right fit. There aren't any slides or stops -- they just sit in there and stop against the wall behind the rack.

And here was my excuse to buy a scroll saw!

Very nice work. Smart move, doing the drawers first.

I admire the patience of anyone prepared to spend time on dovetails.

Excellent work! The drawers and time you spent on "details" make this an exceptional spice rack.

Great job, Alex! The grain flow across the drawers and the scroll work is reayll nice!

                    Excellent design and execution, Alex!!!!!!!!!

My oldest daughter just bought a house in Zebulon, NC (you probably know where that is!) and I bet she would love to have a similar one.

Would you mind sharing where one may locate the build plan?

Looks like maple and walnut, right?

Thanks for sharing the finished project pics and the tons of inspiration!

Thanks for all the great comments!

And hello fellow tarheel! It's my own design, but I'll see if I can find the original drawings and get them online for you.

I think this was actually walnut and poplar because I didn't have a thinkness planer at the time. But if I did it again I'd use maple.

Very nice. I like the dovetail drawers but I think the nicest touch is the scrollsaw work. I'd say the scrollsaw was a good buy, you're scrollsaw skills look great to me.

That looks great. With the dovetails and scroll work it is a far cry from 'just a spice rack' as you post implies.

                              Very nice work.
