"what kind of joinery did you use between the legs and the box?"

The legs are just attached with titebond glue. I've made a few other boxes with legs like this and have had no problems with the legs coming off.

But, what kind of joint then at the corners of the box? Is it a mitered box with the legs applied? I'm not saying it is coming apart, just trying to learn how you did it so I can try it, too.

OH, my bad. The other boxes I've made with this type leg had mitered corners, because I wanted the sides and back level with the top and the front sitting under the top, I made this box using rebates on the front and back. I could have made it with mitered corners but couldn't figure out how to easily make the top 3/4" of each side not mitered and the rest of the joint mitered(the sides are exposed when the lid is raised. I thought of making miters then gluing 3'4" mitered blocks on top of the sides but since the joints are covered by the legs, I figured the rebates wouldn't show.

Wow, that's a pretty dramatic box. Very nice, indeed.

How long did you hang on to that walnut before you figured out what to use it for?

I’d give my eye teeth for a chunk of wood like that! You did it proud.
