    Jewlery Box

The size of this box was determined by the size of the piece of crotch figured walnut that I used for the lid. The lid piece is 12" X 12". The lid is walnut, the body of the box and the tray and dividers are maple and the legs are spralded elm. The finish is 3 coats of clear Watco danish oil.
    Thanks for looking

It would be hard to make it any prettier if it was filled with diamonds. Nice!

That is really nice. Good work! I'd like to see a bit more detailed pic of how it's hinged and the detail on the "latch" area, and maybe a bit more of the legs too.

It's a neat design, and that wood really looks great. I am a big fan of the clear danish oil myself...it really lets the beauty of the wood shine thru, without bringing any attention at all to the finish. I also happen to be a sucker for spalted wood

Hope this helps. The lid is hinged with pins in each side of the top and into the sides. The pin was made from welding rod cut to about 3/8" long and with a brass washer on each side between the top and sides. The "latch" area is just a cove cut into the center of the front to allow you to get a finger under the edge of the top. BTW the top sits level with the top of the sides and the back and sits on top of the front, this allows the top to be raised to 90 degrees and stays there until lowered. The two pics of the legs are of the front legs.

Nicely done & well thought out piece. Boy that lid sure is a focus point - good choice!

Are the trays removable? Is the bottom of the tray fabric covered or bare wood (possibly walnut as well)?

Don, what kind of joinery did you use between the legs and the box?

Nice looking work, BTW. Love the contrast of the woods.

"Are the trays removable? Is the bottom of the tray fabric covered or bare wood (possibly walnut as well)?" Yes, the top tray is removable and the "dividers" are removable from both trays. The box and tray are lined with a brown colored "fake" suede.

"what kind of joinery did you use between the legs and the box?"

The legs are just attached with titebond glue. I've made a few other boxes with legs like this and have had no problems with the legs coming off.
