I don't mean to downplay the worksmanship, because it really is great, but the design of that piece just knocks my socks off.

The proportions of the entire piece are...pleasing, yet unique. The extra wide rails/stiles look great. The pseudo symetric design is great, and I love how "clean" the "lines" are. I also love how the feet are sort of hidden, so it looks like a continuous floating rectangle.

I feel the design is very modern and sort of Japanese (although that could be due to the asian accent decorations placed on top of the piece) and find myself thinking how good it'd look in many different types of wood as well. I'd like to see more designs your wife has come up with, and you've made come to life. I know my wife would absolutely flip over something like that.

PS - Thank you for posting all the different shop techniques. I always enjoy reading them and, although I don't necessarily use them, it's very educational to think thru WHY they work. It's very enlighting and I appriciate it.

Hi Niki - again. This may be a really stupid question but I just have to ask. Did you use a jointer on this project or a planer for that matter. I am trying to learn something here and you have not ever mentioned having either of these two machines so was wondering. It's a stupid question I guess but not being very knowledgeable I really don't know but maybe I should but that's just my inexperience. I guess if you didn't use either of the above mentioned tools that would mean that you had the lumber processed for you to certain sizes. Right?

I also think that most of the compliments should go to my wife.
Making all the "dirty job" (that is a pleasure for me) is one thing, but the final appearance depends mostly on the designer.

Some people just "have it", if I would design it, nobody would want it even free of charge (maybe as firewood).

We lived 11 years in Japan so maybe there is some Japanese influence on her design.

In one thing I'm lucky, all here designs are very simple with straight lines that makes it easy for me.

you are correct. I did not mention it but I'm buying the wood from one of the farmers around here and than I take it to the village carpenter that has this heavy German 24" planer/thicknesser and he is planing it to my thickness, for 8 boards (each 10 feet long, 8"~10" wide) he charges about $7 (it's negociable), it saves me all the work and dust (and the money to buy P/T).
