From one thing to another ...

I recently replaced the 20+ year old redwood deck around our pool with a composite. That little exercise left me with about 300sqft of fairly rough due to serious neglect 2x6 redwood in various lengths up to about 14' long. A part of the pile looked like this ...

So ... wanting to make good use of the wood .. AND ... wanting a good excuse for a planer purchase (bought the Delta 22-580 ) ... I decided to make an Adirondack style chair ... I found a set of FREE plans for "Jake's Chair" at this site that I decided fit my requirements => http://www.internetwoodworking.com/w5/chair.html

I can highly recommend these plans with the caveat that for some reason I cannot fathom ... the printable scaled plans specify dimensions in "hundreths of an inch" as in 19.60" ... which truely drove me insane as I scaled the printed plan to full size. Other than that they are well described and very complete. I also found this site that had a fairly detailed pictorial tutorial in building this exact chair which at times I found comforting just to confirm I was on the right track ... http://www.woodshopdemos.com/adirk-1.htm

With planer, plans and old deck wood in hand I drew, scaled, planed and sawed to this rather scary point ....

This leads me to the comment that there are a LOT of parts/pieces to this project ....

After several hours of assembly and 3 coats of SPAR POLY applied ... I am rather happy to show ...

It was a fun project ... allowed me to use ALMOST every tool and clamp in the shop and gave me a great excuse to buy the planer ...

    Enjoy!

Nice. I like the little touches like the slats on the bottom of the footstool.

Very nice work. I bet you actually "saved" money buying the planer instead of the wood.

Very nice work. There is a lot of satisfaction in salvaging ugly old wood and turning it into something beautiful.

Can't begin to count the things I have built with "trash" lumber; which by the way is getting harder to find. Seems like everyone else (woodworkers) have jumped on the idea. U just have to be very carefull preparing the wood for the planer! I wire brush the dirt (hidden/otherwise) first, then use my metal scanner to find the hidden metal. The extra time is more than worth the finished look u can get. U can't get the same look with new lumber.

Very nice! And that you made it from your olf deck lumber makes it even better.

Hard to believe you turned a pile of wood that most would have scraped into such a beautiful chair. I'd say you made made good use of that planner and all the other tools/clamps you used!

                        Good on ya!

You've made a beautiful, functional Piece out of what most folks would have considered "Fire Fodder", to say nothing of acquiring a new Tool in the Bargian.

Nice work. Hard to believe that chair used to be those old boards. I don't
know if I'd be brave enough to run those through my planer. Good job!
