    Veneered tabletop, chessboard, and table

I'm leaving San Diego this summer so I thought I'd go out with a bang at school
and take 2 woodworking classes this semester. Yikes. Having to work full-time,
interviewing for jobs cross-country, driving 1 hour to school one way twice a
week, all the homework assignments, and having my garage shop shutdown by
the HOA did not help. It was a tough semester but I made it through at the last
minute. This week is finals week so here are my projects.

Class 1, Veneering. Assignments: Minimum 12 piece match for sunburst table
top. Veneered checkerboard with small accent strip and mitered veneered
    border.

Class 2, Wood bending and lamination, Assignments: Make 3 Shaker boxes using
steam bending techniques. Design and build bent wood lamination furniture
    piece.

Well, I decided to combine the sunburst top and bent wood project into one
piece. What you see is a design borrowed from the Thos. Moser catalog
called the Vault Table. It's a 21" tall occassional table with 3 identical arched
legs. I built an MDF bending form, resawed walnut to 1/10" thick, and laminated
them together using plastic resin glue.

The top is a 12 piece walnut sunburst layed up on an MDF core with a solid
walnut surround. After gluing down the veneer using my homemade vacuum
veneer press from Joe Woodworker, I made a router trammel to cut the 26"
    diameter top.

The finish is boiled linseed oil followed by shellac and then wax.

The checkerboard is 1 1/2" squares of straight-grained cherry veneer and
    curly maple veneer.

    Hope you like 'em.
    Paul

Great looking work! I love the idea of combining cherry and maple for the chess board! The border around the chess board, is that also curly maple that you stained? Did you stain the cherry? What is the very dark stripe in the board?

                            Thanks

                            Gerd
