I recently made a bird feeder as a house warming gift for a daughter. If you make something for one, the other family members will want one, as well. This is my third and I have a couple more to go.
Looks great. I have a copper top exterior fire place on my stone deck which requires a little upkeep to keep the copper from tarnishing and getting dark. In case some of you are interested here's what I do to get rid of the tarnish. If the copper is really badly tarnished, mix 1 cup of vinegar, two table spoons of table salt, and a 1/2 cup of pure lemon juice. Then add enough flour to it all until you have a nice looking paste.
Spread the paste over the copper and rub in circular motions. Let sit for about 1/2 an hour, then rinse off with a water using a garden hose. If the copper is just slightly tarnished and you want to get real nice new copper look, cut wedges of lemon, sprinkle salt on them, and rub it on to the copper again, then rinse off with a garden hose. Works great.
For my exterior fireplace, I now have a cover for it, which keeps the rain from tarnishing it when not in use. Just my 2 cents worth.
Thank you all for the great comments. As far as keeping the copper from tarnishing, the tarnish doesn't bother me. It's just a stage prior to the green patina. It's just a personal thing, I guess.
